Loftus Marais grew up in Paarl and received his MA in Creative Afrikaans Writing cum laude at the University of Stellenbosch in 2007. His poetry has already been published in Nuwe stemme 3, ‘My ousie is ‘n blom’, Tydskrif vir letterkunde and the new Groot Verseboek. As freelance journalist he has also published numerous literature-related articles in a variety of publications.

Loftus Marais’s debut collection of verse, Staan in die algemeen nader aan vensters was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize, the University of Johannesburg Debut Prize, the Ingrid Jonker Prize, the Protea Prize for Poetry and the South African Literary Award for Poetry. 2012 saw his second collection Kry my by die gewone plek aguur released to great acclaim.
