DIZU PLAATJIES & BRONWEN CLACHERTY

Dizu Plaatjies is a musician and the founder and former leader of the South African group, Amampondo. He is a graduate of the South African College of Music, UCT and now lectures in their Department of Ethnomusicology in African Music. Since leaving Amampondo he has started a new ensemble called Ibuyambo. Dizu and the new group have presented numerous shows in a number of European countries, and perform regularly in South Africa.

Bronwen Clacherty is a graduate of the South African College of Music, UCT. She also has a Masters in Participatory Community Arts from Goldsmiths, London. She has worked for many years as an established freelance musician in South Africa. Bronwen now works as a solo artist performing traditional Southern African music and her own original music. She fuses Xhosa bows, vibraphone, percussion, keyboard, her voice, mbira and kalimba with a loop station to create a new sound of ancient and contemporary. Bronwen has recently been joined by a group of South African musicians who bring their own sounds to the mix of her band.

Dizu Plaatjies taught Bronwen (who he calls Tholakele), the Xhosa bows and many Southern African instruments in her studies at UCT. He was a great influence on her development as a musician and her interest in South African traditional music. This is the first time that Dizu and Bronwen will perform together in a professional context and they are very exited to share the stage and present the music that they love.
