DEREK GRIPPER

Derek released an album called One Night on Earth late in 2012. It was the first time a classically trained guitarist had tackled the repertoire of the West African harp called the kora. Interpreting the compositions of kora players like Toumani Diabaté, Ballaké Sissoko, Sekou Batourou Kouyaté and Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, Derek has created a new form of guitar music and a new perspective on one of Africa’s most enchanting musical traditions. The UK’s top world music publication Songlines Magazine called One Night on Earth ”a staggering achievement,” selecting the recording as a Top of the World album in March 2013.

The recording has since been attracting some attention in musical circles, getting Derek invites to play in the US, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Ireland, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and of course in Derek’s home of South Africa. When Toumani Diabaté and his son Sidiki fist heard the album at the house of renowned ethnomusicologist Lucy Duran they asked “Did you see him play this on one guitar with your own eyes?” and immediately invited Derek to perform and record together with them in Mali. On the other side of the musical spectrum classical guitar legend John Williams heard the album and immediately cancelled some performers for his Shakespeare Globe series on London’s West Bank, booking Derek for two evenings which sold out and received the following review in London’s Evening Standard:

“Five stars…Gripper has brilliantly transferred [the kora] repertoire onto a regular six string guitar. He sees [Toumani] Diabaté as the Segovia, or indeed John Williams, of the kora, championing it as a solo instrument. And Gripper brilliantly takes it back to the guitar. He’s opening a whole new repertoire of classical guitar music…bringing African guitar into the classical mainstream.” [Simon Broughton]
